This may sound like a silly question, if you think so then move on to the next topic... But, I really value the wisdom here and I would like some thoughts. I have the great pleasure of owning two JD crawlers--a straight 350 gas powered and a 555B. I also have backhoe attachments for both. Both machines run well, but naturally the older 350 is a bit rougher. I will be selling one of the the two but I can't quite decide which to keep! I love the little 350--we've I've rebuilt the steering clutches and ignition system. Meter says less than 1000 hours and the way she runs it's hard to doubt it. I have more cash in the 555b but less labor. It has a 4 in 1 which is extremely useful. Of course the more power and weight come in handy. Here's my dilemma-- I can fix most anything on the 350 relatively easily. Been there, done that. I feel much less confident about the 555b. If she breaks it might be game over. Undercarriage is about the same on both. The 350 is the emotional choice--the old shoe that fits so well but is showing it's age. The 555b is the logical choice--the new fangled tool that can do all but isa horror when it breaks.
I'm just wondering if anyone has a different outlook maybe from experience with one or both of the machines. Aside from building a pond for which I'd use the 555, I can get by with either machine. How fragile is the 555b? Oh, to be blessed with such toys!
350 or 555b? which to keep
Is transport ever going to be an issue? You can move a 350 with a good 1 ton truck, the 555b not so much....
I am one of the worst about getting sentimentally attached to things ie your 350. However all things being equal I would keep the 555b if transport was not an issue. I think you'll find once you commit to her you will find your confidence rise on repairs and maintenance. Even if you have to outsource some repairs you'll probably be money ahead because it simply will not break down as often.
That said I'm attached to my 450c loader and I'd never cheat on her with another loader!! Yet........

I don't really know the 555b model but I would have a couple of additional factors I would consider if making the decision that you are contemplating.
Parts Availability
The 555b would be a newer machine than the 350; thus parts availability from Deere is probably better for the 555b than the 350. I know there are already some parts for the 350 that have gone obsolete from Deere. Having said that, there are probably a lot more 350s out there than 555s so used parts and aftermarket parts may be better for the 350s. You probably should look into that.
Engine Controls
Again I don't know the 555s but the 350s are pretty simple with regards to engine controls (wiring, no computers, indirect injected engine, etc.). Since the 555 is newer it likely has a more complicated engine control setup, and may even be computer controlled although I don't know. I personally would prefer the simpler engine control setup so I don't have to rely on more complicated diagnostic equipment if there are problems.
