Question about engine interchange

Post by Handde1 » Sun Oct 21, 2012 5:29 pm

Can anyone tell me the difference between a 3164DT 03 3 cyl diesel engine and a M43TE 3 cyl diesel engine? I have a 74 310 backhoe with a bad engine (3164DT) and found a early 70's 3 cylinder out of a 350 crawler (M43TE) and was wondering if they are interchangable? They look the same, But I was hoping someone would know for sure?? Thanks, Mike

Yes they will interchange. Without my book handy I will assume that the M43TE is a 3153 engine. Considerably smaller than your 3164. Some of these other guys may have a reference handy and can answer that question better.

Your engine swap will need to be looked at sense the dozer application may have a different water pump and mounting plate. I do not recall exactly how the 310 backhoes are arranged on the front of the engine. You should be able to swap what you have over to the other engine. You may also need to change the rear engine plate or bell housing as the two different applications may be different. I know they are when changing from Construction models to Ag tractors. The great thing with Deere engines is that you can usually change things around on the two different engines to fit what you have.
I just changed out my JD 1520 Gas engine Ag tractor with a 3179 Diesel out of a JD 350D dozer. I had to change the water pump and plate as the Dozer application was positioned to high for the radiator and shroud to fit properly. I also had to change my rear engine plate from my gas engine over to the diesel so it would bolt up to my tractor.
You are going to have a smaller engine with less horse power. However it should work without any issue.
Over the years I have swapped a lot of these engines around so you shouldn't have any issue.
So... Good Luck!!! :D
40 plus years working on JD 350s, 400Gs, 450s and other equipment both Ag and Construction.
