JD 450 oil in starter

Post by IdahoMtnMan » Wed Apr 18, 2012 3:07 pm

I have a 1965 JD 450 and the starter failed. Pulled it out to rebuild and found it full of oil which indicates a rear engine seal leak. I have a few questions that hopefully someone might be able to answer for me.

1. Can I install the new starter to move the dozer about 100 yards away from where it quit without damaging my rebuilt starter? Reason being is because its parked on a hill side with no cover and would like to have it on flat ground and under cover.

2. I know I have to pull the engine to fix the seal so I was wondering if I need to build a hoist or can I can i use a 75 HP John Deere tractor with the front end loader to lift it out? I have no idea what that engine weighs and can't find any specs on it. Its a 3 cylinder diesel motor.

If anyone has any input on my questions or input on the repair I have to do I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,
Dan

I doubt you will hurt the starter in that amount of time.
If it is a 3 cylinder, it is a 350, not a 450.
Either way, your tractor should lift it fine.
