starter not engaging
took out old starter which had 2 1/8th washers for shims. Bought a new starter from john deere, installed it without the washers and now it won't mesh with the flywheel. Should i have to shim it. Would prefer not to because of weather and dirt. any suggestions
I have never shimed a Deere starter
show us what it looks like!Lets get this straight you are working on a 450D and what modle number and,or part number of starter was on this crawler ?I think you should find a proper starter as soon as possible as you can be messing up the ring gear and the starter is a lot cheaper and quicker to change.Digitup.

I JUST BOUGHT THE CRAWLER, STARTER CAME WITH SHIMS AND DID RUN. STARTER WAS WEAK, REPLACED IT THROUGH JOHN DEERE, WITH THE CORRECT STARTER. STILL NEEDS SHIMS. I DO NOT WANT SHIMS IN THE STARTER. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. ANY OTHER IDEAS
TOOK ENGINE OUT, LOOKED AT FLYWHEEL, NO DAMAGE TO THE FLYWHEEL. EVIDENCE OF ENGAGING ON INSIDE TIP OF STARTER. HELP
AGAIN. THANK YOU EVERYONE
