350 clutches, reverser? Help

Post by awtwelding » Mon Apr 26, 2010 8:16 pm

Just bought this thing and want to get it right. I need a starting point. Does not steer properly. I adjusted steering to jd spec.(have service manual) This is what is happening. Pull on right lever dozer turns properly. Pull on left lever bulldozer starts to turn but both tracks stop rapidly. Driving forward or reverse dozer pulls to right. Are the steering clutches shot? Any way to tell at this point if reverser has a problem? I know the guy that put diesel in the left hand clutch side,( I think the right side is slipping not the left) I will go back and shake his hand! Can you tell me how to find the master link for the chain. Do they all come apart? Thanks Dano

Butt it agains a tree or something, if both tracks will spin without touching the steering levers, it is not the reverser.
Like Ken said, your right clutch is shot. If the guy really put diesel in your left clutch, it is shot too. Diesel is a petroleum product that will absorb in the fiber discs and never come out. It will gradually weep to the surface as you get the steering clutches hot and then the left clutch will slip as well. My guess is if he did this, there was already oil on the discs and he thought he could wash it off, you can't. Tear it down, fix the oil leak, and replace the clutch discs and most likely the brake band.
