transmission gears on a 450 c

could anyone tell me how to get the thrust washers on the pinion shaft lined up to get it out of the casing. I have a tech book but the picture doesn't really show if they are to line up with the slotsin the shaft or gears or both. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
