Proud new owner of a 40c

Hi there! Just got arround to buy me a 40c...thought it'd be useful for skidding lumber on my land. Here are a few pics, let me know what you think:













It's my first experience with such a thing so I'll probably have a bunch of questions for you oldtimers. Why not start now!

I got the PDF file for the parts manual here (thanks jtrichard), anybody's got service and/or operatormanual? On the short term, I'm mostly interested about fluid type and capacity for tranny, engine, radiator, etc...

Also, I can't find the serial number on the little guy, where is it?

Now, I don't know if you can see on the pictures above, but the sprocket assembly isn't the same on both sides. One's got a big nut and the other is just a concave cap. Could it be from different models (ex. 420c or 1010)?

Speaking of which, can I use steering clutch steel and fiber discs from a 420, 1010, or else on the 40c? These seem more easily available arround here.

Someone has put the final drive from a 3 roller 40 or an MC on the LH side. Your crawler has 1010 rails which have a bigger bushing than a 40, so you will be really riding up on the bushings with your left side. You should look for another 420 sprocket to put on the LH side.

Thanks for the response, Lavoy…though I’m not sure I got this 100% straight.

From my understanding, I got both chains from a 1010, LH final drive (including sprocket) from an early 40 or MC, RH assembly is 4 roller 40, right? Now how come I should only switch the LH side sprocket if the 40 sprocket doesn’t fit the 1010 chain?

Pardon my ignorance, but I’m confused here.

The way I read what Lavoy said is that you have A 420 sprocket on the right side that fits the 1010 chain and a MC or 40 sprocket on the left that does NOT fit the 1010 chain so you need a 420 sprocket on the left side

Alright! I think I get it now... and it's quite obvious looking back at the pictures.

I've done my homework and looked up the MC, 40, 420, and 1010 parts catalogs. So the MC and 40 have the same sprocket, earlier 40 share the final drive assembly with MC, later ones with the 420. 1010 has got it's own final drive but same sprocket as the 420

Hi,

And, next, you can add that the 350 rails will work if you cut the teeth off the 420 sprocket and weld on a 350 rim sprocket. Might as well have all the data!
