It's yellow but it's not JD. My brother and I were able to snag this G1000 over the weekend. It's been sitting in the shed up in the woods for 20+ years. We pulled it down the road to our Dad's house over the weekend where we can asses what needs done. I already noticed it needs new radiator hoses as a mouse chewed through one and one of the rubber power steering hoses has a hole. First order of business will be to give it a good pressure washing, change the filters and fluids and see if it will fire. If we can get it running we'll probably use it the duration of this year around the farm and see what else needs work and then give it a full restoration. The tractor is quite big for the size farm and equipment we have but the price was right we think ($750) so why not have fun with it.

It's a 68 Minneapolis Moline G1000 Vista Diesel.

Good luck with the project. I have a '69 G1000 Vista LP. Mine started and drove on the trailer, after rebuilding the starter, hanging a 20# tank on the side, new batteries and hotwiring the ignition. I am told that 504 is a fine engine either LP or diesel. Mine also has about 800 lbs. of cast iron bolted on the front. I have a G-900 diesel but it had set for years with the exhaust open. I poured a quart of ATF down the exhaust but think I will have to pull the heads and blocks to get it freed up. I use a 4-Star and M-670 regularly.
I see that one has the closed center hydraulics also.

Shinnery how can you spot the cross center hydraulics?
I'm really new to MM's. Do you know a good parts source? Something equivalent to Lavoy.
The hour meter only shows 824 hours, but that seems low unless the tractor just had a really rough 824 hours. It looks like there's a lot of leaks and all the knobs are gone. It just needs some TLC, it's a big plus that it's a complete tractor and hasn't been hacked into.

Lots of people I've talked to say it's a heck of a running tractor so we'll see.

I can get aftermarket tractor parts, I just don't advertise the fact that much. May not have a lot of MM stuff available, but I can sure check.

I have about a bakers dozen Minnies, and the G-900-D and Vista are both closed center hydraulics. Your Vista has the same white fiberglass topped box all the levers and throttle are sticking out of as mine so I assumed it is probably closed center to make you aware it could be.
The best parts source (if Lavoy doesn't mind too much) is Welters Farm Supply, 417 498 6496 , 14307 Lawrence 2190, Verona, MO. 65769-8224. Ed Welters just died this spring but I believe they are still going, it was supposed to be a family business.
Also River Dale Farm Shop 920 295 3278, W 1201 County Road J, Princeton, WI. 54968-9343 supposedly has parts and does repairs.
Also check www.jetstar.minneapolis-moline.com they have a page of parts sources and forum.
Yesterdays tractors has a M-M page for info.

You may be able to find Operators, Shop and Parts Manuals for it on eBay but Floyd County Museum in Iowa has s lot of info on Olivers and M-Ms (Oliver had a plant in that town) and has some manual reprints. JenSales sells reprints of the M-M manuals and Yesterdays Tractors web site sells them cheaper than you can get them from JenSales. I&T usually is not worth the paper they are printed on, in my opinion. Lavoy may be able to get the JenSales manuals also.

Thanks for all the info shinnery. I have my eye on a service manual on ebay right now. Lavoy is having trouble finding the radiator hoses so I'll try one of the places you mentioned.
I'm sure I"ll have more questions in the near future.

Hey shinnery, hopefully you'll see this.
What is the battery configuration on these G1000's?
It looks like mine should have three batteries. Two in parallel and not sure if the third is in series with the other two or parallel.
My dad's father-in-law has a U-302 and he said his is two 6 volt batteries and one 12V. That sound correct?

My Vista-LP is setup with a rusted out swing out battery box just under the floorboards on the right side. It takes two of the long skinny 12v batteries in parallel. I believe they are something like group 3H or 3T etc. I believe a group 31 would work by itself. Dodge used a single battery on the Cummins engined pickups from '89 up til '94.
The ampli-torque shift lever wants to hit the tops of the batteries, it has a piece of heater hose around it to prevent sparks I think.

I got a good look at things today. mine has the swing out battery box where two batteries would sit. then further back toward the rear there is another tray where one more skinny battery would sit and connect in parallel to the other two in the swing out tray.
The tag on the starter isn't in good enough shape to make out 12 or 24 volt.

Reviving this old thread. I'll post here because there isn't much action on the Moline forum and for some reason I can't get registered on Yesterday's Tractors.
Below is a link to the photobucket album instead of posting tons of pictures. This has turned into a pretty big project but will hopefully be really nice when we finish it.

We ended up having to get a new radiator. We were getting pressure in the radiator, so we thought it may be a bad head gasket or head. Decided to tear it all down over the winter. Found the front two pistons were cracked, along with the front cylinder section. Had to track down new pistons. Intake valves were pretty bad, so we put all new intake valves in and guides. Resurfaced the heads and cylinders. Ground all the valves and seats to match. New rod bushings and bearings. All new rings.
It's finally coming back together now. We're really trying to have it finished for the Memorial Day parade but I don't know if that will happen. A lot left to do and the weather has not been cooperating to lay the paint down.
