This is a sad case for sure. However there might be a chance for this guy to get a bit of a break living on your lawn. It would appear that he has had both of his antlers broken off somehow and that might be what caused his downfall. It seems that he has chosen to take his chances with the humans rather than let the predators eat him.
I saw this once with a white tail that had two dogs run him to exhaustion and all the poor thing wanted to do was get into my truck with us. It ran up and stopped in the middle of the highway (while the panting dogs waited in the ditch) so we stopped and it
came right to us for protection. We stayed a while but when we had to leave, the dogs picked up where they left off.
I hope that your new guest has a better fate.

I have seen that with a younger buck who took his chances with our old farm dog who wouldn't hurt a sole. The conservation officers watched him daily and figured the dog and the buck had encountered before and Rex was a friend he could trust .You just never know but if your dog is a kind old sole that can sure help earn respect in time of need.Digitup.

The old boy did what I'd hoped he'd do and found my water trough and bellied up for a good long drink then bedded beside it. This morning he's gone. I hope he's just down in the heavy brush below the trough.
He's so weak that if the coyotes find him they'll eat him alive. He couldn't fight them off. Dog showed no sign that he was close by, so?? I just hope he has enough time to get a clear head and build back up.
