Wanted 40C, 420C, or MC

Post by sellcl » Sun Jul 26, 2009 3:00 pm

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could purchase a 40C, 420C, or MC. I am located in Augusta, WI so the closer the better however I am willing to travel to pick one up. I don't care if the machine runs or what condition it is in but I do know one thing that I really want one. Anything at all would be helpful I am looking to restore one. You should see some of the ones that I have tried to purchase in the past pretty rough. I don't care if the motor is locked up tracks falling off or dented metal sitting way back in the woods. Any information on a John Deere Crawler would be geatly appreciated. Thanks

You should first ask yourself how much are you willing to spend, how much restoration work are you willing to do yourself versus having someone like Lavoy do it, and what are you going to use the machine for? If strictly a collector machine to be shown, then your answer will probably be different than just for occasional farm use. if a show machine, much more work needs to be done (or done by someone else) than for a farm use machine.

Since parts for these machines are becoming more difficult to find, you really should think about this before actually looking at machines.

Also, buyer beware on machines listed on auction or classified sites, especially if you can't look at beforehand. I purchased a 2010 crawler loader for parts/restoration using Epay, but had lots of pictures, spoke to the owner beforehand, and didn't overpay (in my opinion).
(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment

First off I want to tell you thank you for spending your time in trying to help me in my quest to find a crawler. You don't know how much it means to me to have someone else helping out. I know how few and far between these things are and it is awesome that you helped me out.

I am willing to spend some money for a crawler but I would rather get one that is in rough shape because I own my own body shop and have a great friend that knows all about 2 cylinder John Deere's. This is why I posted the ad hoping that people would respond about the crawlers that they might have heard about sitting out on the back 40 of one of there friends. I can do the body work/paint and motor work. I just really want one which I can restore and have around for a long time. Honestly I am not looking to buy one quick fix it up and then turn around and sell it. I am looking to have one to fix up get looking nice and then putz around and do some work with.

I know that I can do a very good job on restoring a tractor because I have done dozens of them at my shop. However I have never done one of my own much less a crawler and I think that it would be a great project. Anyway I would like to thank you for your time for helping me out trying to find a crawler. I tried contacting the guy from Kansas which you told me about but I am not sure if it worked. I wish the guy would have left a phone number. I tried writing him an email and I don't know if it sent but if he doesn't respond in a few days could you help me out in that department as well. Anyway thanks again for your time and effort and am looking forward to hearing to you again. Thanks

Juat a word of caution. You state you want one in rough shape because you own a body shop. A rough crawler will have little to do with body work. If you buy one with a run out undercarriage, and bad drive train, being able to have nice sheetmetal will mean little. New hoods are available for less than you can spend your own time fixing an existing one. Fenders are easy to fix, grilles are harder yes, but on the whole not a lot of work. I would rather have a crawler with a sound drivetrain that came with no sheetmetal at all, than one with nice tin and no undercarriage.
A fencerow crawler is there for a reason, most likley becuase it was no longer feasible to fix it, again likely do to drivetrain or undercarriage. Your best value it typically a crawler that someone has done some repairs to, and just no longer has a use for the crawler. They are around, sooner or later one will pop up, there was a 440 on here within the last few months like that. One last comment, crawlers are a whole different world than tractors. Whatever you have done to a tractor, triple it at least on a crawler in terms of work and money.

I have a 440IC that runs, has a loader and counter weights. The steering clutches are frozen but the track and rails are good. It is in pretty good shape, but it's too much for mr to restore. let me know if you're interested.

Yeah I am actually really interested in this machine where are you located in Minnesota and what is your phone number? I would rather talk to you on the phone rather than through the computer. Do you happen to have any pictures of it you could just email them to me at sellcl@uwec.edu Thanks

One trick I used when I was looking for my crawler was to post a "crawler wanted" ad in the "Wisconsin State Farm". I posted what kind of crawler I was looking for and how much I was willing to pay depending on condition. I got so many phone calls I couldn't respond to all of them.

The reason I think this worked so well was that there were a bunch of folks that had crawlers but hadn't actually considered selling them until they saw the ad. I ended up with a fairly rare 1010CA crawler that was in running condition 6 miles from my house (and delivered for free) although I got calls on 440Cs through 350s from the U.P. of Michigan to northern IL.

Just a thought since I saw you were in the neighborhood.

Oops, I meant Wisconsin State Farmer. It an agricultural newpaper that is published statewide weekly. Here's a link to their site.

http://www.wisfarmer.com/

You want to post in the classified section in Equipment subsection Industrial Equipment. I think it will work pretty well for you. There's a lot of people with crawlers in Wisconsin and they sort of come out of the woodwork when they see an ad looking for one. I posted that I would pay up to $3000 depending on condition for a 440C or 1010C and ended up at $2500 for a running 1010CA. I had people call me with 350s they were willing to part with for $3000 to $3500 although at a much further distance. Good luck.

Hey thanks for the good idea I will give that a try if you said it worked for you there is no reason why it shouldn't help me somewhat. Thanks again.

I had a few questions pertaining to a crawler that someone called me about. This guy has a John Deere 40C that has a locked engine, rough paint job, 4 rollers, and no blade, also has no serial tag. He wants $1500 for it and I was wondering what this machine was worth. The metal is sound but has the normal dings. What do you guys think this is worth. Also I was still looking for any two cylinder crawlers that you guys happened to know about thanks for your time and get back to me! Thanks

That might be a good parts crawler, but too much money to get it running again.
