My grandfather has decided to sell his 40C. At age 86 he figures it's time to get something without steering sticks, maybe a 350. He's trying to sell it locally and I want to make sure he gets a fair price:
I don't know a thing about tractors but I'm ASE certified for electrical, and I just completely rewired this thing and converted it to 12-volt negative-ground (the old 6-volt battery died, and instead of buying a new one we figured it'd be better just to update it). I used an MSD Blaster 12-volt coil and a 42-amp GM alternator; I added a 6-position fusebox for lights that we never got around to installing. The pressure switch is no longer part of the circuit. In order to keep the original light/ignition switch, I added a "kill switch" to shut the tractor off (the chrome knob visible just above the choke). We still have all the working 6-volt stuff.
I also just rebuilt the carburetor.
You can see some welds on the left-hand... uh, arm, I guess. It starts and runs well but he says one of the steering clutches sticks a little. Ammeter works, temperature gauge does not, hour meter unknown (I was afraid to even try running 12 volts to it). Non-Deere hydraulic piston appears to be from Tractor Supply. Battery sheet-metal has been removed but we still have it, looks like somebody cut it up for some reason. It seems to have been green originally and was painted yellow (not very well) at some point in the distant past.
We're in northeastern Massachusetts and I notice prices seem to vary by location. I'd appreciate it if any of you guys can tell us what's a good price; I'm thinking somewhere from $3000 - $4200, but I don't know what he'd take. Also, if there's anything we can do to bring the value up, or anything I should take pictures or video of. Thanks!
