welding finals
Found a nice big crack under one of my finals on the 1010 the other day. Is this cast or can I just use some 6010 to seal it back up?

I'm not 100% sure but I'd bet they are the same as a 420 which is cast. I've had to have one of my finals repaired. Found an old gentlemen who stop drilled the crack and then heated it for a few days under heat lamps. After that right before he brazed it up he heated it with a torch to get the whole case good and hot. Then he brazed it and cooled it very slowly using heat lamps and such over a period of days again.
I know that's labor intensive but he's been a welding instructor at the local community college for over 30 years and I felt he'd prolly know more about it than I.
That said I've also had a steering clutch housing repaired by him with equally good results.
There may be other ways to fix these cracked castings but that's how I delt with mine and it has worked.

Hand clutches, not for everyone.
Steering clutches, for even less.

I know it's agravating and seem frustrating but I do know that if you take your time it's worth it. Skimping will only send you right back into the same problem to be fixed correctly again. I know this weekend I finally got arround to getting my final back together only to find a severe groove on the drive axle. Looks like a few more weeks added to the project but I know that this final will hold gear lube again The worst thing is trying to get someone to powder metal this thing and turn it down this time of year. Ohh well.
Ofcourse as soon as it's 'rolling' again I'm pulling the motor out.
Good luck!
