440 Diff To Steering Clutch Shaft Spring

Post by hunter41mag » Thu Nov 17, 2005 11:37 am

Lavoy,

After looking at my parts from the removal of both final drive housings and reviewing the parts manual I noticed that I had no spring between the steering clutch shafts (inside the differential). Is this needed?

I also did not have the 2 bolts in the bottom of the final drive housing (from underneath) for both the left and right housings or the 4 bolts in the drawbar brace bushings. Is there a good reason to leave these out?

I hope to get everything cleaned up in the next week and than order needed parts.

Thanks, Don

Don-

That spring, best I can tell, helps keep everything with a little tension. Mine was missing and I purchased one from Deere. Not very expensive.. I'd add it back. The bolts in the the final to steering clutch housing.. WOW.. I'd make sure they get put back and put in nice and snug. I'd be sure to check that steering clutch housing for cracks though. Cracked they can be fixed.. but I have a picture of one somewhere that's.. well.. beyond cracked. Keep those finals tight!

As for the bushings for the draw bar.. I imagine you would want those again to help keep everything braced up.

All of the bushing and the special bolts are still available from Deere.. I've just been through the same procedure... hey is your crawler kin to mine?!

Don,
Jimmy pretty much covered it.
The spring is to keep outward pressure on the drive shafts so that the drive hub stays in contact with all the fiber discs.
