jd 440icd final drive rebuilding....help

Post by frozendozer » Tue Dec 11, 2007 7:25 pm

iam in the process of assembling my final drives, new bearings and seals is all that seem to be needed. however as the final drives are put back i noticed that the teeth on the gears dont match up completely. The 14 tooth pinion gear and the 55 tooth drive gear are offset about 1/4 inch. the 55 tooth gear looks like it could be moved over to make up the difference.

What iam i to do, i assembled the final drives the same way i took them apart. Iam pretty sure that the drives have been worked on in the past. Can i use a shim to make up the difference? there is already a "special washer" as per the parts cataloge in place. Is there any place where i need to measure for tolerances? the manuals i have are not all that clear on this issue.

thanks for any advice

Some of the other guys would know better but I'm remembering a similar problem on my 1010 finals and I had one of the bearings in backward that Lavoy pointed out to me. The cup faces the opposite way you'd expect on the 1010 and I'm guessing the same on a 440.

Hope this helps.

Always remember when installing axle shafts to make sure the bearing is seated all the way against the spacer, and the spacer is against the bull gear. On time I assembled a final, thought I had it done, and then looked in the bottom, and could see a gap between the spacer and the bull gear. Turned out I had done the same thing as you. Now when I put them together, I hit outward on the axle flange, as well as reach up from the bottom and see if I can turn the bushing with a long screwdriver.
