420c, direction reverser and HyGard

But I gots CRS.

I also gots plenty of HyGard here on hand.

I also just changed out the reverser oil in the 420c today. Sounded fine in forward. Really noisy in reverse! Oops! Now I remember! HyGard is too thin. So, drain it back out and put some heavier stuff in. Ah. Much better!

Problem is I won't do this for another 2-3 years and I bet that pesky old CRS will strike again!

And, yet I didn't put it in the hydraulic system. I *did* remember to not use HyGard there.

I keep other hydraulic oil on hand for the old stuff. Sits right next to the HyGard buckets. And, yet, CRS! Sigh.

Isn't yours a clutch type reverser? If so, Hygard is the modern replacement for 303 fluid. Gear lube won't play well with the clutch discs long term.

Hi,

Yes, the differential reverser. My 420c is a Phase III from 1958, so it has the new reverser ala the 430 and 440.

I use a different brand of modern hydraulic oil, not gear lube. HyGard is Deere's modern replacement for 303, but it is thinner than 303 was and the spyder gears are pretty noisy with HyGard. The stuff I use is also not the garbage some places sell as 303. It is heavier than HyGard and that helps. ISO 46, IIRC and HyGard is ISO 36 (also IIRC).

There is an oil supplier in Dunn, NC: Warren Oil, as in the old Amilie refinery in Warren, PA. They have all sorts of good lubricants and only a few miles away. The same kind, essentially, is sold by Tractor Supply as their Traveller brand.

I don't use Deere's HyGard in the hydraulic system of the 420 or the M as the old gear pumps don't like it, either. I use HyGard in everything else, like the JD350C which likes HyGard just fine in everything.

I know there are 2 Hygard's now, I think I use the thinner one is my tractor for the hydro. I think it says low vis on it, but don't have a jug around any more to check.

got me a bit confused...what do i use in my jd440ic reverser? i have not changed it..if i recall somewhere said ATF, if so what kind? or what iso if hydraulic?

The ATF was the old Type F, simpler to run Hygard or equivalent, which now is Deere J20C specification I think.
