Hi,

Well, of course, they kept the 4-speed available as well. Cheaper. But one had to have a 5-speed for either Live PTO or a Reverser.

on my 420, i think there 2 kind of transmission, one is 4 gear and the other is 5. i got nothing written on the floor of my crawler where the stick shift his, and right now, can't move the stick to check it. what would be the easiest way to find out. also if my 420 is a 4 gear, can i take the 5 gear transmission and installed it in my 420 without using the old transmission case from the loader. thanks guys for all the info.

The 4 speed and 5 speed have different input shafts

So would that be just a different clutch disk or are the input shafts more different than that? Curious, inquiring minds want to know. All my 440ICs are 5 speeds. Bryce

No change in clutch between 4 and 5 speed, no change in reverser between 4 and 5 speed. Only difference in input shafts is one less keyway on everything but the large trans 440's. Then is it only a spacer added where the extra gear would go on a 4 speed.
On the wheel tractors, live PTO was offered only with the 5 speed I know now why. From what I can tell, really should have made no difference in terms of the trans itself, just the gear set and case on the front of the trans along with different prop shafts and two stage engine clutch.
