440IC Brake Adjustment Nut/T bolt Threads

Post by jboard4x4 » Fri May 22, 2026 9:53 am

I am reassembling my left final steering/brake assembly (installed new brake band) and the brake seems a little tight and I am only using 1/2 the threads in the adjustment nut. Is this normal. Id like to back it off 1/2-1 turn but that doesn't leave much threads left in the nut. I know its going to break in some and loosen up then ill be able to grab more threads. Where its set right now I can tap on the band and it slide it in on the drum but not by hand. When I installed it I had to take the pin out of the rocker linkage to allow enough movement in the rocker to get the nut on and then use a small prybar on the rocker to tighten it up to get the pin back in. Any tips/tricks is appreciated.

Is this normal?
Maybe i'm over thinking and it should be that tight till I test run it a little bit?

I am not an expert on these having only rebuilt 2 finals and adjusted on a few more.
I think one possibility is that the foot brake linkage adjustment is too short. With the brake foot pedal all the way back against the stop, the pin In the yoke at the front of the linkage on both sides should just slip in and out.
If the linkage is too short it will start to apply the band linkage. This could cause the adjustment issue you have. The John Deere shop manual has this adjustment last but if it is wrong it causes the other adjustments to be off.

Hopefully you have the brake return spring and the and the brake band spring installed. Also the brake pedal has a spring.
