Knowledge Needed
Knowledge Needed
I've recently bought a crawler that was in pretty rough shape, engine was locked up, radiator is missing, assuming it has been sitting awhile. Hoping to find some folks willing to share knowledge on this machine I know very little about.
I have no idea how to add pictures, but here is some of the info on the data plates: below the ignition says "440-ICD" and "461591". The plate off to the right side of the console says "834" I'm assuming it is a 4, and "5122" above serial number, but the plate is broke/corroded off so that's all I can read.
Currently I am trying to track down a carrier for the throw out bearing "T10472T". It has a 2 cylinder gas engine. That's about the extent of what I know.
Thanks.

Re: Knowledge Needed
Welcome to the Boards.
440ICD is the model. That means it left the factory as a 440 Industrial Crawler with a diesel engine (2-53 GMC (Detroit). You saying it has a gas engine the model should be a 440IC. Sounds like you have a bit of a mutt, likely the gas engine got transplanted when the diesel got bad.
The serial number 461591 makes it a 1959 machine, other than who knows what else was changed along with the engine. With a missing radiator I will ask if you bought this as an unfinished project receiving and engine swap.
Does it have a loader attachment? The loader used on the 440crawlers was the 831, could the 4 on your 834 be a 1?
Lavoy Wilcox, the provider of this site works on and sells parts for these older crawlers. There is a good chance he can help you. Call 701-361-1006 during CST business hours or email postmaster@jdcrawlers.com.
Don't be surprised if a moderator moves this thread on your 440 over to the Early Models Board. The 440 crawlers were before the 1010 and 2010 crawler which are the cut off models for the Early Models Board. This Late Models Board starts with the 350 and 450s.

Re: Knowledge Needed
Understood, as I didn't know the year, I was guessing on where I should post. Never been on anything like this before. It does have the loader and a winch on the rear. I was quite excited to mess with this, but it seems like for every one thing I fix, I find 2 more broken. So far I have freed up the engine, replaced everything in the distributor, had the starter rebuilt(which I was told goes to a diesel, so things are starting to make sense), built a new wiring harness, verified the tracks will turn, verified it goes into gear, verified the steering clutches disengage and engage like I believe they should, built a stronger clutch linkage(I thought this was the problem), removed the engine, found a destroyed throw out bearing and broken clutch carrier. I did however start it and got to hear the engine run last week, that gave me a much needed boost of excitement, but I'm stuck until I can find this carrier. Worst case scenario, I'm thinking I could have the broken out piece repaired at a machine shop? There is a decent sized piece broke out where the bearing should have been sitting.
Just getting frustrated...

Re: Knowledge Needed
I'm not positive I have one out, but I definitely have one in an assembled crawler I am going to tear down for parts.
That is a very very late 1960 crawler, within a few hundred serial numbers of the end of production, kind of neat.

Re: Knowledge Needed
Do you think the one I have would be worth seeing if a machine shop can repair? I mean, I've got to have one one way or another. Most of the parts I have bought so far have been from Steiner, but I've struck out on this. Realistically, once I get this replaced, a new engine clutch, and a radiator mounted and plumbed, I should be able to see this thing move. I'm not going to give up on it, but I didn't have nearly this many issues repairing my old Melroe-Bobcat M371, I know they are two totally different machines, but dang.
Re: Knowledge Needed
Sorry, I mixed up the lines on the serial number to year, Lavoy has it right.
Give him a call, it looks like he can help you out with a throwout bearing carrier.

Re: Knowledge Needed
Thank you, I updated my location. I'm not real familiar with using this board yet. The only other piece that I know for a fact is broken is the coupler that goes from the harmonic balancer to drive the hydraulic pump. Does anyone know off the top of their head if this is a part that may still be produced? Not going to lie, I haven't really checked. I have been doing everything in stages. I.E, if the engine won't work, why worry about the clutch, if the clutch won't work, why worry about the hydraulic pump, if the pump won't work, why worry about the hydraulic lines that are probably going to bust... Save myself a little headache I suppose.
Re: Knowledge Needed
Austin96,
The coupler i suspect is the splined one from the pump; etc...mine to needed replaced...i thinkLavoy well may have one, but i did get mine online..just measure yours to match...inside diameter etc....my splines were sheared off on 1 end..so no good..dont recall cost but not much.am still waiting on the Tech to get engine up and ready,...needs resleeved to match pistons/rings...420 gas

Re: Knowledge Needed
Yes, I believe we are talking about the same part. On mine, the shaft broke off the harmonic balancer though.
