420c steering clutch
420c steering clutch
I bought a 420c several years ago, starts fine, good power, however the left steering clutch does not seem too disengage, I adjusted the throw-out bearing as far out as possible, still no release. I removed the final, the clutch pressure plate and discs appear new. the steels are clean, however appear to have been corroded and cleaned at some point. I found some pieces in the bottom of the case which appear to be from the pressure plate.
I wonder if the pressure plate was not adjusted correctly on assembly?

Something is odd with the wear pattern on the one fiber disc, it appears to be only on the very outside, this is not right.
The clips are from the pressure plate levers, someone left them on when installing the pressure plate, they should not be there. If the clips were on when the clutch was assembled, chances are the pressure plate was never adjusted. This may not be the problem, but worth checking.
I think I have some of the bolts on hand, would have to check.

Yes exactly, the clutch discs look brand new, with the part number still on them, the picture does show the disc on top of a steel in the background.
The steels all measure 0.095 +/- .001-.002, however they all have a funny texture to them rather then being smooth.
I am thinking I need to replace the steels, get the gauge for adjusting the pressure plate and reassemble it.
Does that make sense?

All the steels look about the same, on both sides, like they had some corrosion that was cleaned off leaving some pitting. It seems to be worse around the perimeter.
