40c Clutch Adjustment

Post by fundytides » Mon Dec 21, 2015 8:52 am

Some time ago, I installed a rebuilt clutch in my 40c. I didn't have a clutch adjustment gauge at the time and didn't realize I even needed one. However, the clutch has way too much free travel and doesn't disengage completely. I later installed a new steering clutch so now have the tool. I plan to pull the engine and adjust the clutch fingers but can't find the directions. I'm sure they are somewhere in the forum and would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Can I adjust the clutch on the flywheel or do I have to remove it? Thanks.

I would think, the rebuilt pressure plate would be pre-adjusted. Then the free play would be adjustable on the linkage adjustment on the side of the housing.

I would have thought so too but after adjusting as far as it will go, I still have way too much free play.

ALL pressure plates, engine or steering installed in ALL Deere crawlers 450 and older need to be adjusted once the clutch pack is assembled. Yes, the pressure plate is adjusted on a bench somewhere in Eastlostgumshoe to a standard that is close enough for the 250 different applications any given part may fit. The catch is that that setting may or may not have any relevance to your particular machine, hence why Deere put out a service bulletin and made a gauge to set them.
You might install a pressure plate and it works, but I have had numerous once come out at maybe 50-60% or what factory setting would be. That is a lot of clutch life given up for no reason.
