Will a 440 engine bolt right in to replace a 40? Thanks, gregjo1948

Keep in mind that your adding horsepower to a 60 year old tractor.
Thanks for your reply. Why the need for the 440 radiator? Will there be any reason to alter the hood? Seems like there is a difference in the 440 and the 420 where oil is added and a hole has to be put in the hood. I really don't want to put extra holes in the hood. gregjo1948

Hi,
The 40 is lower HP and so lower heat and so the 40 rad won't get rid of enough of the extra heat. You'd boil over in about 30 minutes of working.
Keep in mind that the 20 in 420 meant 20% more power than the 40 and they had to add a water pump and a larger radiator.
The late 440 had more HP than the early 440, which was the same as the 420. They boosted the 440 gas when they added the 2-53 diesel to make gas and diesel equivalent. So, you might have more HP than even a 420. But, if you use the rad with that 440 engine, you will be OK.
The 440s I have seen still sport the oil fill / crankcase vent cap on top of the valve cover under the hood. The 40 hood has the lower hood sides, but also has the hole for the cap. I am pretty sure it was always in the same place on all of them, M thru 440.

You will also need different throttle shaft braclet as upper water outlet is different, and nothing to bolt old one too. On the whole, I wouid not do it. You will need more than just the engine, and in the end, I can't see drivetrain standing up to the additional power long term. 40 engines are easy to come by, or no more expensive to rebuild than 440.
