transmission cover removal 420c

Post by jeep » Sat Aug 19, 2006 6:14 pm

This may be the dumb question of the day...... I have taken all of the bolts out of the top cover of the transmission (shifter) and it won't come off. it has been setting for quite some time and the shifter will not shift out of neutral. am i correct in assuming that if I get the shafts freeded up it will come out.......

transmission cover

Jeep,
If you have all the bolts out then whack the shift tower with a rubber
mallet. The cover should come free even if the trans is in gear.My 40 was
locked in two gears and I was able to break the cover loose with a
little tap on the tower, where the shift lever comes up.In order to
remove the cover once its loose you need to rotate cover to the
right and lift.JimAnderson

tranmission cover

Jeep,
The shifting forks on these transmissions are curved so that
the cover won't lift straight up.The cover needs to be rotated as you
lift it.See if you can look into the trans with a flashlight and see
if something else is causing the problem.Jim Anderson
