420 won't move

Post by country53 » Thu Jun 08, 2006 5:37 pm

I was using my 420 today shoving some fallen trees out of the pasture and went to back-up and it made a couple of hunches and would' move forward backward or nothing. It is a 4 speed , doesn't have a reverser and the PTO wont go in without depressing the clutch PTO works fine. The shifter on the transmission works fine too. Any one have any suggestions as to where to enter the crawler?

Normally I would say prop shaft, but you said you still have power to the PTO, so that is not the problem. If you try to shift any gears with the clutch out, and the engine running, does it try to grind at all?

You can shift the gears freely with the engine running and the clutch out without any grind, however if the crawler is moving the gears grind if you try to put them in.(I had to have my wife pull me home with a tractor)

I had a simular thing happen with my father-inlaws 1010, turned out that the rivets sheard off on the ring gear, the 1010 had a inspection cover over the ring gear, once I took it off, it was easy to see what had was wrong, but took a while to work down the line to find the problem. Since this had a pto and a winch, I had to tear it down to almost a bare frame to replace the ring and pinon, not fun but did learn alot about the machine.Hopefully your problem is not as involved, but maybe something to check for. Good luck, Dan

Yeah, I've been looking at the service manual and it looks like I'll have to remove transmission and differental(lack of a better word) to work on it any way. So, might be a good time to rebuild everything anyway. I just did rebuild the engine, final drives, replaced rails and cleats, all 10 track rollers front idlers and the only thing I didn't work on was the trannyand rear end so here we go.

Pull the top cover and look inside, you might be able to see something wrong, or at least get an idea of what you are in for.

Ring gear hub has failed, all of the bolt/dowel holes have broken out and it also trashed the ring and pinion. Does anyone know if John Deere still sells these parts?

Ring and pinion from Deere was $2500 last I knew. Depending on serial number, I should have them.
