Ring Gear removal on 1010
Ring Gear removal on 1010
Hey Lavoy, you helped us out with new clutches, brakes and bull gears for our JD 1010 dozer a few years ago, and now I'm back with another problem we'd like to ask your advice on.
Some of the rivets on the ring gear broke. We have the machine torn down (following the service manual) and are at the point where it says to "roll the ring gear out". As far as we can tell, this is physically impossible!! We can't even figure out how they got it in there in the first place!!
Do you have a magic secret incantation to use? Or are we just missing some glaring detail that's going to make us feel like morons when it's pointed out to us?
I sure will appreciate your input!
Thanks,
Sheila

If you don't have the reverser out so you can loosen up the bolts on the front of the case, yes, you will likely have to pull the tranny. I know of some people that have torched the powershaft so as not to do this. Not my recommended way of doing it, but it will work.
Yes, got the PM, I have most of it on hand, still checking on some other pieces.

Oh oh........you went beyond my level of technology. "Reverser"...hmmmm..I know the book talks about some models having such a thing, but I don't think ours does. I hope I'm not being entirely stupid here.......I mean, of course we do have "reverse' gear....but I think I understand that the 'reverser' is something different.
So now I don't know what bolts you mean. We have the thing totally stripped and the main problem seems to be that darn shaft that has 'gear grooves' on the end. We have no idea how we should go about removing it. I believe if it wasn't there the ring gear would be able to tip to one side a bit and then 'roll out' like the book says.
I will have to show Duncan your reply and see if he knows what you mean better than I do. Also, I'll take a picture or two and see if I can post them so you'll see what I'm trying to describe........I might not being saying things right! (sure wouldn't be the first time...!!)
At any rate, you don't know how much we appreciate you taking the time to respond. Thanks!

Well we figured it out.......had to take the transmission apart to take the pto shifter out and then the shaft comes out through the front. Looks like we might actually get this darn ring gear out!
Now the million dollar question is Can we get this entire mess of parts all put back together (without a box of 'leftovers'..!!) and the tractor back on the road??
Will keep you posted........

We're about to start putting our little 1010 back together and realized that we're going to need a Transmission Rear Cover. There was a winch on the back of the dozer which replaced the cover, and since we're not going to put the winch back on we'll need one.
Are you able to supply one Lavoy? If so, what would the price be?
Also, do you know how much the winch would be worth? It needs work.......but all the pieces seem to be there.
