440 IC brake/ clutch pedals
My clutch pedal hub broke free from the brake pedal shaft (there is still some friction there, but it can move independantly), and now the clutch does not fully disengage when I put my foot on the brake. Based on the diagram in the parts manual, it looks like there is a woodruff key that keeps the two pedals aligned, so I assume that the key sheared or the keyway wore out. To make matters worse, the whole shaft has a little play through the direction reverser case and it appears that the reverser case is leaking oil there. I don't see any seals in the parts manual, but I assume something is supposed to be there to keep the oil in. It also looks like the only way to service the pedal/ shaft assembly is to remove the reverser. I just rebuilt the engine and put it all back together last fall -- I don't really have time (or the desire) to tear it all apart again. I thought I could drill though the clutch pedal hub and shaft and put a roll pin in to lock them together again. That doesn't fix the shaft play or oil leak, though. Any suggestions?

Ben,
The only thing "locking" the brake and clutch petals together is RUST.
They are supposed to operate independantly of one another. The problem is that one petal is attached to the shaft that goes through the tube that the other is attached to. They corrode and rust together, very common.
The oil leaking out the brake shaft hole indicates that the rear seal in the reverser is leaking. The area of the center section (reverser case) that the brake shaft goes through shouldn't have oil in it. I guess that it could also be the front seal on the transmission leaking, Which case is loosing fluid? The down side is the only way to properly correct both conditions is to pull the engine and then pull the reverser (center section).
As always, I stand to be corrected.

I've had this machine for ten years and the pedals have been locked together the whole time. I assumed that was the way it was supposed to be. The oil leaking from the reverser must have freed the clutch hub on the brake pedal shaft (it is the reverser and not the transmssion that is leaking). I guess I'll have to drive with two feet now. Thanks for the input.
