JD 440 parts in Australia? Need final drive housing

Post by dmcca » Mon Nov 24, 2008 4:06 am

I have a 440 Lanz which i have started to pull apart. I have already spoken to Lavoy about clutch plates, bearings, etc but today after pulling the left final drive off i fond that the housing is in very bad shape. Someone has smashed it at some stage and it has been re-welded but the inner bearing seat is completely stuffed. As a result both bearings on the main drive shaft out of the final drive have disintegrated due to excessive play and the large sprocket inside has lost 3 teeth.

Does anyone know of a JD wrecker in Australia?

I am hoping to pickup a good housing, and possibly a sprocket. If not i'll get the sprocket welded and machined and try to create a miracle with the housing.

Hi dmcca

I can't help specifically but try sending an email to the Two cylinder down under club (tcdu at slingshot dot co dot nz) and ask there. They have members in OZ.

One of the administrators on Heavy Equipment Forum is ''Squizzy''---he's a real knowledgeable guy in Australia. He should know

Just an update...

Managed to get the damaged final drive housing repaired... cost a huge amount though, needed sleeves for bearing housings, drive sprocket welded and cut to replace 3 missing teeth and a complete overhaul of bearings, etc.

Also rebuilt the steering clutches at the same time and hope to have it all back together within the next few weeks.

So far this has been a very big project, but its been fun and thats the main thing i guess... lets just hope it works when i bolt it all up cause i dont think ill have the patience to pull it apart again if theres something else wrong!!!
