440 Brake Band Installation

Post by jac » Mon Feb 13, 2006 12:41 pm

Installed both final drives and adjusting the throwout bearing and new brake bands. During this I noticed that on one drive, the brake band appears to not be on the drum parallel to the brake drum. I believe the brake band may be hung up a little either on the drum or more likely, pushed in a little on the bottom where the final drive pin goes through the loop in the band. I tried loosening the band and readjusting it but it seems to not want to move and align.

Will this align on it's own or do I need to partially pull the final and try to get this aligned? Looks to be out of parallel by about 1/4". I am judging alignment by looking from the top cover opening and seeing on one side of the drum a space of about 1/4" between the edge of the band and the edge of the drum and by the time the band loops around the drum, it is even with the edge of the drum. Band is not overhanging the drum, just not sitting on the drum straight.

Suggestions?

I would first back off the band brake adjusting nut and then try moving the band - perhaps with a large screwdriver through the adjusting cover. If you cannot realign it that way, try rotating the drum.

Good luck,

Derek

Derik:

Thanks. I have the band nut as loose as it will go (without removing it)and have tried moving the band. No luck. Not sure how to turn the drum since everything is new and pretty tight. I will adjust the throwout bearing and engage the pressure plate and see if I can get the drum to turn.
