I have a small hole, about 1/8" dia, right in the top of my exaust manifold. I am thinking of welding it shut as it is easy to get to right on the machine, is this a good idea? Should I use a special cast iron rod or any other special procedures.
Thanks
Paul

Manifolds are quite difficult to weld, you will most likley have to use bronze to get it to stick.

I agree with Lavoy. Brazing will work fine for your application. Reasonable preheating of the surrounding area will help with the application. A fluxed rod will help with the impurity/adhesion issues involved with a used cast iron. Mark

I'd vote for brazing as well Paul. If you goof it up, the aftermarket replacement manifolds appear to be readiliy available in the $300 range.

I don't know where the hole is exactly on your manifold, but I sealed a hole in my exhaust manifold on my 2010 with high temp silicone. It has held up all year, and you can't even see it.

If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer.

Thanks, I didn't even think of brazing - it sounds the way to go and will give the area extra preheating. My biggest worry was blowing right through with the stick welder if the cast iron was thin and making an even bigger hole, so now I don't have to worry about that.
Thanks again,
Paul
