Mstancer, If i recall correctly....the starter is a pull (lever) type starter....not a button or key switch...that lever actually has a solid copper contact inside the starter that actually gets worn out....and can be turned 180 degrees to make proper contact....my old john deere dealer actually rep...

Just a bit of info, if needed..

I went to ACE hardware hereabouts and found various sizes of brass and copper tubing that i used to help cut the oversize wear down a bit..takes a bit of patience but better than the slop
Also try some plastic tubing a bit thicker walls

Dear Clueless, First of all.....are you in anyway familiar with working on automobiles? Handy with tools, common sense, can change spark plugs/ oils etc...in other words kinda basic mechanical knowledge?? Read all the posts pertaining to jd420 machines...most have quite a bit of info relating to get...

Believe i have about $1000 in rebuild on my 420...course it had to be sleeved cause #2 cylinder had crack in it...and hard time getting new crank bearings..dont know supply now. also had valve job done while out..runs great tho, so aint complainin

First thing comes to mind...how are the battery cables themselves..i made new ones for my machine. See that is a diesel so a heft one...have you taken the starter out and tested it? sounds like could possibly be bendix hung up and not retracting.

When working on any of these machines....best option is jacking up on concrete floor after driving both tracks over 2- 2 by planks under each track....jack up a couple inches for room underneath...with jack stands pr solid wood blocking....then pull the 2 by planks from under the tracks and you can ...

Well guys, I kinda wish NOW that i woulda kept my jd440 ic 6 way...I sure did a lot of work with it! It ended up at Lavoys who went thru it and did a beautiful job for the fellow up in Wisconsin. I now have a 420 loader, a bit harder to do the work i want, but she will do it..still a few minor kinks...

Well Folks...she is back up and running!! Guess she wanted some loving! Just did not want to co-operate..so I went thru pulling spark plugs, squirt shot of oil in each cylinder, put-em back in, even demounted hydraulic pump and turned engine over without plugs, reinstalled, shot a bit of carb cleane...

Not one that i like.. Still wont start .... Since i re=hosed the blown one...i think i may have hooked up my ground ass backwards...negative ground ...and put my 12 volt jump box on it....suspect i may have fried my ..voltage regulator...however...i do get spark at the plug and with proper ground et...

Now need new battery...remember..bent post!! and giving up the ghost ..so new needed

And now i'm baaack!! starter back too...a brush wire shorted..60$ to fix....gotta install it now...12 bucks for delco lead

Hank, Am not sure if you did get this figured out...in order for your dozer to turn...the steering brakes must stop the track on the side that you want to turn to...which means the clutch must disengage just before the brakes apply to stop that track..if clutches or brakes are slipping you cannot tu...
